Shopping Spree

San Fernando Valley View

We are getting closer to our September 27th departure for Utah. My preparation to be the rock includes reading Galen Rowell’s book “The Inner Game of Outdoor Photography” and helping the team prepare with some local hikes.

Yesterday Jerry and his personal wardrobe coordinators (Connie and I) went on a shopping trip to REI and Canoga Camera. Jerry picked up an SPF 50+ long-sleeved shirt, a sun protective hat which includes a warranted of return if lost, and good pair of Merrill hiking boots. He can now say good-bye to his overbearingly heavy denim work-shirt, baseball caps, and tennis shoes.

Connie got some hiking pants and shirt and at Canoga Camera a step up ring for her circular polarizer.Earlier in the week, Connie also got a new tripod – a good looking SLIK. I’m glad she was able to find something worthwhile in her price range.

For me, I picked up the LowPro Inverse 300 AW belt-type pack. Last month I updated by tripod head with the Acratech GP Ballhead. Damn! I just check the website and I’m pretty sure the prices went up $50 since I purchased mine. I also got the Induro Carbon 8X CT114 tripod specifically for hiking. I used it for some shots at the Wings Over Camarillo air show and it worked really well. The legs areĀ  a little stiff, but the weight and stability are great – 3.8lbs total for the tripod and head.

Suggested Utah Packing list from REI

Here is a suggested Utah Packing list from REI. I am suspect though. Camera, film and spare batteries are listed under Optional Field Gear and no mention of needing a tripod.
